Gluconeogenesis
Gluconeogenesis takes place in the liver, it consists of eleven enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Many of the reactions are the reversible steps found in glycolysis. Three reactions are replaced with more kinetically favorable reactions. Thus the glycolytic enzymes pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase, and hexokinase/glucokinase are replaced with PEP carboxykinase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase.

Gluconeogenesis begins in the mitochondria with the formation of oxaloacetate by the carboxylation of pyruvate via the pyruvate carboxylase.

Oxaloacetate is decarboxylated and then phosphorylated to form phosphoenolpyruvate using the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK).
